Savvy Kingman continues to reign supreme in Hong Kong

Savyy Kingman, by Kingman out of Lady Linda, scores back-to-back victories to continue his consistent form at Happy Valley. In his last seven runs, he has not finished out of the top three.

Purchased by Gordon-Watson Bloodstock as a yearling in 2018 for 300,000 gns, the four-year-old gelding has gone on to win over £290,000 in prize money.

Successful Yearling Sale Period

As the yearling sale season draws to a close, it has been a very busy period for CGW Bloodstock. A total of 36 yearlings have been purchased in 2021, an increase of 9 from last year’s 27 yearlings purchased.

A mixture of colts and fillies were bought by a range of sires including Frankel, Dubawi, Acclamation, Mehmas, Kodiac, Sea The Stars, Territories, El Kabeir, Mukhadram, Zoustar, Muhaarar, Footstepsinthesand, Australia, Ulysses, Lope de Vega, Almanzor, Galileo Gold, Churchill, Unfortunately, Oasis Dream, New Bay and Kingman.

Kodiac and Sea The Stars were the most popular yearling sires purchased with 5 purchased by each sire.

Yearlings bought ranged in price from £18,000 to the most expensive yearling purchased in Europe for €2,400,000 at Arqana August Yearling Sale.

Will Douglass dominates at Horses-In-Training Sale

Tattersalls Autumn Horses-In-Training sale saw Will Douglass purchase 27 horses in training. Of these, 24 will be heading to Qatar and the remaining three will stay in training in the UK with Charlie Fellowes.

This year saw a considerable increase in numbers purchased from previous years with 13 purchased in 2020 & 15 purchased in 2019. Purchase prices ranged from 3,000 gns to 190,000 gns with a total spend of 1,082,500 gns.

Eve Lodge lands Charlie Fellowes his first domestic Group winner

Eve Lodge, by Ardad out of a Footstepsinthesand mare provided trainer Charlie Fellowes with his first domestic Group victory when battling home to win the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes at Kempton on only her fifth start.

Bought as a yearling by Gordon-Watson Bloodstock in 2020 at Tattersalls Ascot sale for 12,500 gns, the filly has won over £40,000 in prize money already.

Gordon Watson Bloodstock purchased the top lot at the Arqana August Yearling sale, buying the very attractive Dubawi filly for €2.4 million. The filly is the third foal out of the Galileo mare Typique. Charlie Gordon-Watson said “She's from the best Niarchos family, it has group 1 2-year-old winners, and she's by Dubawi. Her dam's first two foals were very good and Andre Fabre loved her. She's beautiful, she's the best Dubawi filly I've ever seen."

Ebro River lands the Group 1 Keenland Phoenix Stakes

The winner of a listed race back in May, Ebro River faced Group 1 company for the first time in the Keenland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh. Ebro River is the first Group 1 winner for his sire Galileo Gold, also trained by Hugo Palmer. Ebro River was purchased by Gordon Watson bloodstock at the Tattersalls Book 2 yearling sale for 75,000 gns for Al Shaqab Racing.

Gale Force is the dam of multiple Group 1 winner Hurricane Lane, owned by Godolphin and trained by Charlie Appleby. She in now in foal to Too Darn Hot and is proving to be a very exciting mare.

The future looks bright for TOO DARN HOT

It is very exciting to see the first foals of Too Darn Hot on the ground. A European Champion two-year-old and multiple Group 1 winning three-year-old, Too Darn Hot’s outstanding race record and stunning pedigree to match makes him an extremely exciting stallion prospect.

This week Charlie saw the first of his offspring in the flesh, a fantastic colt out of Listed winner Frankel Light (Frankel) who was bought for Watership Down Stud at the Arqana sales a couple of years ago. The future looks very bright for the young stallion if they are all like this.

Too Darn Hot’s pedigree really is second to none, being out of the incredible three time Group 1 winner Dar Re Mi (Singspiel) and a full brother to three top class performers in So Mi Dar, Lah Ti Dar and De Treville. Dar Re Mi is out of Darara, who was purchased by Charlie as a broodmare. She also has an extremely impressive stud record, having produced 6 black type horses including Group 1 winner Rewilding and also River Dancer who sold for 3.4m guineas as a yearling before going on to Group 1 success.

TROPBEAU wins Group 3 Prix de la Grotte

The welcome return of French racing brought with it a great fillies race in the form of the Group 3 Prix de la Grotte, considered by many to be the main Classic trial for fillies.

The Andre Fabre trained Tropbeau showed all of her class and determination to take the race in very smart fashion, proving that she can get the mile easily and confirming herself as the one to beat in the French 1,000 Guineas next month.

Already a multiple Group winner, Tropbeau had an excellent two year old season last year, finishing off with a slightly unlucky 3 ^rd in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes and being crowned top rated two year old filly in France 2019.

Purchased by Gordon-Watson Bloodstock at the Arqana Breeze Up Sales last year, the daughter of Showcasing has a speedy pedigree, with her winning dam Frangipanni being out of Group 1 July Cup winner Frizzante. She is certainly a very exciting prospect for her owner Lady Bamford and everyone involved.

A Great Week for Gordon-Watson Bloodstock Purchases

IRacing has returned with a bang and we have been delighted to see so many Gordon-Watson Bloodstock purchased horses winning for their owners over the last week. Several of these included first timers to the racetrack which was very exciting and promising for the rest of the season.

CHERIE AMOUR made it a first winner for her sire Shalaa (also purchased as a yearling by us). The two year old filly out of Angel Falls won the Prix des Colonnes Morris for her owner Lady Bamford and trainer Andre Fabre. She was purchased from the Arqana Yearling Sale last year.

QUEEN OF LOVE was extremely impressive on her first outing and yet another success to for the unstoppable Lady Bamford/Andre Fabre team. The three year old filly by Kingman was also purchased last year at Arqana, as a breeze up.

ASTRO KING made a very good impression first time out at Wolverhampton in a competitive maiden for Sir Michael Stoute. This three year old son of Kingman, bred by The Niarchos family is out of Astroglia (Montjeu). He was purchased from Tattersalls Book 1, for his owner Saeed Suhail.

FIRST PROPHET showed a very pleasing attitude and plenty of ability on his first start, winning the novice stakes at Newbury on Friday for trainer Charlie Fellowes and his owner, Mr D Blackstock. Purchased at Fairyhouse last year for €50,000, he also gave his stallion New Bay his first winner. The colt holds an entry in The Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot this week.

Meanwhile over in Australia, HARBOUR VIEWS was outstanding on his first attempt over a mile. He won impressively for his owners OTI Racing and trainer Matt Williams. Originally purchased from Tattersalls as a yearling by us, he has thrived since being exported to race in Australia.
Finally, a couple of older horses SOLID STONE and legendary old timer RED VERDON also won very nicely over the weekend. Solid Stone bolted up at Sandown on Saturday for the in form William Buick and Sir Michael Stoute. The now four year old son of the late Shamardal was another horse purchased as a yearling on behalf of Saeed Suhail. We were also delighted to see the seven year old RED VERDON looking as good as ever and taking the Listed Betway Grand Cup Stakes yesterday at Doncaster. He has been an incredibly consistent horse for his owner Mr Arculli and it is fantastic to see an older horse still enjoying his racing. He was originally purchased from the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale by us.

Hong Kong Champions Day Preview

Amidst these very strange times, we hope that you are all safe and well.

With lockdown in the UK set to continue and racing still suspended, we are very much looking forward to top class racing this weekend in Hong Kong. The FWD Champions Day has three Group 1 races and over £6,500,000 of prize money on offer.

Gordon-Watson Bloodstock has three privately purchased horses running on Champions Day, one in each of the three Group 1 races.

PLAYA DEL PUENTE will take his place in the feature race, the Group 1 QEII Cup . The four-year-old Irish import is in excellent form, having only just been beaten by Golden Sixty in the Group 1 Hong Kong Derby.

In the Group 1 Champions Mile , MORE THAN THIS will take on Hong Kong's top rated miler Beauty Generation. Placed in all 3 legs of the 2020 4YO Classic Series, More Than This has shown top class consistency and is sure to put up a big performance.

Last but not least, BIG TIME BABY will take his place in the Group 1 Chairman's Sprint Prize . He was on course to contest the Group 1 Golden Shaheen at the Dubai World Cup Carnival in March, but the worldwide lockdown put paid to that. The six-year-old is a five time winner in Hong Kong, winning three times at Sha Tin this season and holds a solid chance.
